Massachusetts-Boston

Boston’s Freedom Trail

By Connie Young

The Freedom Trail should be at the top of every visitor’s list when sightseeing in Boston. This walking tour is the essence of Boston’s vivid and pivotal role in the shaping of American history. Sixteen historical sites can be visited in less than four hours, covering two and a half centuries of significant and recognizable locations. An easy to follow red brick or painted line connects these sites. Whether self-guided or an escorted tour, available through the National Park Service, located at 15 State Street, (617)242-5642, opposite the Old State House, history buffs as well as casual tourists will find the experience educational, unique and memorable.

Begin your historical journey on the Boston Common, one of oldest public parks in the country (1634), where British troops camped prior to the Revolution. From this location begin your journey back in history as you explore places made famous by our country’s founding patriots. The Boston Commons is bordered by Tremont, Charles, Beacon and Boylston Streets.
