Woodstock, VT.—Home to happy
water buffalo, The Woodstock Water Buffalo Co. in
South Woodstock is also where
happy workers make and package products that
the public loves.
At this
"green" farm with its verdant fields and
eco-friendly approach,
incredibly delicious cheeses and yogurts are
produced in the cleanest surroundings we've ever
seen!
Once you
sample the tasty dairy delights, you'll be hooked not only on
the pure flavors and rich textures, but also on the
food value they serve up with more protein, calcium and
less cholesterol than equivalent products made with cow, goat or sheep milk.
Distributed
primarily through health food stores and gourmet
shops, Woodstock Water Buffalo Co. products fly off
grocery shelves as the company works to keep pace
with demand. In a few short years since
production began in 2003, water
buffalo have taken the U.S. by storm!
Increasingly popular products
from an animal not commonly seen in America are the
brain child of investor David Muller. The former chief
executive of Summit Technology, a Boston-based
equipment manufacturer for laser eye surgery, sold
his company for a healthy profit several years ago,
then purchased a
farm in Vermont. Like successful New York attorney Oliver Wendell Douglas
who followed his dream of owning a farm on
"Green Acres" 1960's TV comedy series, Muller had little
knowledge of farming when he bought the land,
envisioning a winery. Quickly discovering
that Vermont winters are too harsh for wine
grapes, the investor went back to the drawing board
to come up with a new product and strategy for his
acreage.

After much
research and a fantastic meal that included
mozzarella,
the New Englander hatched a plan to do something
totally different―he
bought a herd of water buffalo whose milk would be
ideal for making the freshest gourmet cheeses and
yogurt. With a solid marketing plan under his belt
and appreciation for fine foods, the Ph.D. who holds two master's degrees,
one from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton
business school, enlisted the help of the University
of Vermont's top dairy scientist.
In addition to
receiving technical assistance, he welcomed an unusual offer from the State of Vermont. They were
willing to loan close to $1 million! Muller may have felt
more like a guinea pig than a water buffalo, knowing
so much was at stake in an unproven venture. Yet the numbers worked
on paper and could potentially serve as a prototype
for other farm enterprises in Vermont. >
